ST JAMES SINGERS CONCERT INFORMATION

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Our concert is next Thursday, June 12th! The event begins at 6:30 pm and I would like all students to meet me at 6:15 pm in the first floor hallway. If your child is in band or strings, they may go to that ensemble to check in and I will catch up with them. Please have your child wear a white shirt (the shirt for their uniform could work) and a navy blue or black bottom. The dress shoes your child wears to school are also fine. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.

          Thank you,

News

Can you believe it's the end of February? It's hard to believe it's nearly March with the weather and snow days we've been having! I am hoping that we've seen the last of it and that spring is on it's way!

Due to the unpredictable weather, I'm being a bit lenient on when 6th, 7th and 8th grade projects are due. If your child was in a class that was supposed to hand their project in last Tuesday (The 18th) they can hand it in tomorrow and still get a full grade. Also, 7th graders in the Red group are due this Thursday because we could not get into the computer lab to do research like my other classes got to. However, after this week, regardless of what grade your child is in, if I do not have your child's project they will be docked a full letter grade. This is in addition to missing any sections on the rubric. I don't like being harsh like this, but otherwise I will be hunting kids down well into April, looking for a project that was supposed to be quick and fun for quarter three. Please, please, PLEASE email me or have your child see me on Tuesday if there are any problems or concerns.

In the younger grades we've been learning about jungle animals with a variety of songs, dances and activities. This week I will be reading Giraffe's Can't Dance by Giles Andreae. There will activities to go along with the book, Stay tuned!

My middle grades have been making great progress with the recorder! I'm hoping to have them play some duets and songs from other books in the coming weeks.

Have an excellent week,

It's 2014!

Hello everyone,

It's a new year and things in the St. James music room are better than ever!

Pre-school, Kindergarten and First grade are constantly on the move in music class. They have their favorite songs that we have been doing through out the school year such as Green Jelly Bean, Monkey's on the Bed and A Ram Sam Sam. The students are also learning about different animals and creatures living in jungle with songs and games. We even did Ernie's "Tiger Hunt" from classic Sesame Street. (I used to dance and play to this one when I was in my early dance classes!)

Second, Third, and Fourth Grade are up to a variety of activities. Learning the difference between music that is fast and slow, reading musical notes, and watching clips of from Fantasia and a cartoon about Richard Strauss are somethings all three grades have done or will do. Third and fourth grade have also been making steady progress in their recorder studies.

Fifth grade has also been working at the recorder, their advanced skills make me challenge them each week. 5th Grade may soon be ready to add an Alto Recorder to their arsenal of musical knowledge. Stay tuned! 5th Grade has also been watching the Prince of Egypt which is an animated, musical version of the story of Moses. We've been talking at length about the bible story as well as the music and how it makes them feel.

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade have been busy with the recorder, composers and music in film respectively. These students were assigned a project for quarter three. 6th/7th are doing a presentation on a musician or band of their choice and 8th grade is doing a presentation on music and film. The projects are due 2/18/14 for students in 6th and 8th grade and 2/20/14 for grade 7. I can't wait to see how these turn out!

In other news, I'm so happy and grateful for how 2013 played out. I have a wonderful job with great students, parents, and colleagues. Did you attend the winter concert? Weren't the 1st and 2nd graders wonderful? I'm proud of how they did and I'm also proud of all my students that were in band and strings. I can see the joy it brings some of my students to be involved in music and I hope that love never fades. My only hope is next year my choir will be at that holiday concert as well, but I have great feelings about the spring concert. :)

In the non-education world, I got married on November 23rd. It's hard to believe it's almost been two month since that beautiful day! I cannot find any complaint in how it went, my husband even sang to me which was a surprise! Jamaica was also beautiful, and as I type this and it's snowing heavily, I miss the warmth and sun.

I'm looking forward to 2014 and what it has to bring. (hopefully a house!)

Updates

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. Mine was spent making wedding favors, tallying up meals (apparently prime rib is the thing to eat at weddings) and getting over a touch of something. This week is already almost over and I wanted to give some updates and reminders.

Grade 3 will have their first playing test next class. Practice, practice, practice!

Grade 6 will retake their music definition quiz (if needed) during their recess on the 22nd.

Grade 5 is behind because between me being out sick last Thursday, and their field trip today they still haven't gotten their quizzes back! I'm planning on having their retake (if needed) be during recess on October 31.

My younger students have been learning different songs, working with percussion instruments, and preparing for their Christmas pageant if they are in first or second grade. I'm also planning on starting a "Songs of the World" Unit. The first country on the list is Italy and we'll be learning the Tarantella! I have several ideas for other countries to work on, but I would love suggestions if you have them!

My 3rd and 4th graders will probably be my busiest students because not only are they playing recorder, but they will be taking part in aspects of "Songs of the World" as well as participating in a class percussion ensemble like their older colleagues.

Grades 5 through 8 will continue learning about the topics we started at the beginning of the year. We will cover this material in the first half of class. For the other half of class my plan is to have the students play various percussion instruments and even compose music for a percussion ensemble. I would like students to work in groups and on an individual level for these compositions.

I'm looking forward to all the fun things that are going to happen in my classroom!

Important!

Hello,

I just wanted to let all St. James Singer's Parents/Guardians know that there will be NO PRACTICE THIS THURSDAY 10/10! If I could make this as large as a billboard I would! I have a staff meeting where attendance is mandatory. So please, please make sure your child takes the bus or has a ride home! If you child is in the aftercare program, there is no change. I will post on the St. James Singers page as well. By the way, we've had two excellent practices so far!

6th Grade and 5th grade will get their quizzes back this week. Students in 6th grade will retake their quizzes if needed 10/21 and 5th Grade will retake them 10/23. Both will be during recess.

8th Grade took their quiz today, tests will be back on 10/21 due to no school on 10/15.

Looking to the not so distant future...my wedding is coming up in a month and a half. I will be gone 11/22 to 12/5 for my rehearsal, the wedding and my honey moon. There will be no music class, St. James Singer's or anything else for me during that time. I just wanted everyone to be aware, but I will remind you as it gets closer. (Eeek!)

Have a wonderful week!

Reminders and Updates

Sorry that this weekly update is getting published on Thursday afternoon. I've been prepping two schools for their monthly mass and preparing for Grandparents Day at my other School (St. Catherine of Siena) Regardless, the past week and change has been a music filled one at St. James!

27 Children showed up to our first Choir rehearsal! We practiced various vocal warm up and learned a hymn that I learned to sing at the music camp I used to attend/work at. Our music has arrived so we will dive into that this week. There was some confusion (myself included) on where pick up will be. We will remain in the cafeteria, not go up to the gym for dismissal.

If you have a first or second grader, you may have already heard that we started practicing our songs for the Christmas pageant. I'm very impressed with the singing in class. I know it seems early to be thinking of December, but it will be hear before we know it. I know our production will be great!

The third graders got their recorders last week and they already sound like they have been playing for much longer. Right now we are working on the basics, but they will get books after I make an order.

4th Grade has had one playing test and will have another one next week. Please check the homework page to see which example you are responsible for, each class is in a different place.

5th and 6th Grade just finished taking their first quiz of the marking period and I'm very pleased with the results. Please continue to keep up the hard work. Students will have the opportunity to retake the quiz if they got a poor grade. We will discuss this more when I hand the quizzes back next week.

My other grades (K, 7, and 8) have also been working hard. Every week I see progress in each and every student.

On a general note, I'm noticing that some of my students are not always displaying their best behaviors. This effects everyone, myself and their classmates included. While music is a fun time, it also needs to be a time where we listen and follow directions. I want students and parents to be aware that I give many chances, but I will have to start taking recess from those students who can't cooperate with my expectations. This is a small percentage of the school population, the majority of my students are excellent, but I wanted all to be aware.

I hope you are having a great week and have a wonderful weekend. More house hunting for me!
